A flat roof can be a distinctive part of any home, but it’s unfortunately difficult sometimes for flat roofs to shed water. Built-Up Roofs

Traditional hot-tar-and-gravel roofing is built from three or more piles of waterproof material, which is alternated with hot tar and a layer of smooth stone. It used to be common to use tar paper to create these kinds of roofs, but it is now more common to use more advanced materials like fiberglass membranes.

The gravel and stone used is a great to make your roofing fire resistant. It’s also attractive, which can be a major benefit if any windows overlook your roofing, and it’s the cheapest variety of flat roofs. On the other hand, it’s very heavy and can be difficult and messy to install.

The professionals at Charleston Roofing and Exteriors, LLC do not recommend that this material is used for any Charleston home that’s currently occupied.

Rubber Membrane

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is an extremely durable rubber material that can be used for flat roofing. It’s also very resistant to sunlight and other potentially damaging elements.

However, EPDM is more vulnerable to punctures, and it will cost more upfront than other materials. The standard black colored versions of EPDM will cost less than lighter colored versions.
